Seeing Pradeep reminds me how long we've been doing this DNO thing. We've been at this since 2004 and I've been blogging about it for over five years already! It all started when our kids attended the same daycare and preschool. A bunch of us Dads started hanging out after the kids had moved on to Kindergarten and bigger things. Kevin, Pradeep and I, along with Alan, Wally and William, all had kids together who finished preschool in 2002. Pradeep and I also had kids in the class of 2004, along with "P," Paul, and Erich. David's and Joel's eldest kids were the year in between. Along the way, we've picked up other dads like Dan, Robert and Jim. Throughout this journey I have learned a lot about the value of real friendship (not to mention, real beer).
After hanging out with Pradeep, Dan, "P" and I move two doors down to Standings Bar. "P" orders a La Chouffe (8% ABV). It's a delighfully sweet unfiltered blonde Belgian. I go for the strong Southern Tier Pumpking (8.6% ABV). Normally I really like this beer, but tonight there's a cream corn note that's a bit funny. That's usually the result of Dimethyl Sulfides (DMS). Dan opts for the Troeggs Mad Elf Ale. This heavy beer (at a whopping 11% ABV) has a bitter cherry aftertaste, but it is really good. It's both malty and spicy.
Dan heads back. "P" and I head over to 99 Miles to Philly for the awesome cheesesteaks. They know Philly here.
Naturally, we end up at Bar None. There's nothing to recommend this place, unless you like hanging out with 20-somethings in a noisy dive that stinks of old beer and that has all of the charm of the DMV.
We of course love it, judging by how often we seem to end the night here. I had a Shock Top, Michelob's version of an unfiltered wheat beer. It's fine, I guess—certainly better than a Budweiser—but it's no La Chouffe.
